This post is for all women not only women with PCOS.
How many times have you been told that PMSing and excruciating period cramps are normal? that the only solution is pain killers? and that women are meant to suffer that way?
Normalizing a health condition because the medical community failed to have a scientific explanation to what it is and how to fix it is very common in the modern history of conventional medicine.
There are several reasons in our modern life and environment that could cause dysmenorrhea (period cramps) but this does not make it natural or normal! And there is a safe natural solution for almost all types of dysmenorrhea.
The reasons could be summarized as below:
1. Hormonal imbalance
2. Stress (emotional, physical, environmental)
3. Inflammation
You will probably need to try a few natural remedies until you settle on the best one for your body.
Suggested remedies:
- The hormonal balance is usually caused by estrogen dominance. Plastic, soy and cosmetic products are filled with false estrogen that gets stuck in our bodies.
Make sure to cut off those products, eat a lot of flax and chia seeds (excess estrogen gets stuck of their fibres and goes out of the body with stool, have a bowel movement at the very least once a day (magnesium citrates help) preferably 2 - 3 times per day, use some hormone balancing herbs like vitex and black cohosh depending on your age.
- Stress (read post 5): adaptogens are the best remedy for any type of stress – add to it anti-bacterial, -fungal, -viral herbs if it is due to an infection. Also, stress increases with fatigue, so try to slow down around your period and you will notice a huge difference.
- Inflammation is usually associated with pain, but there’s a worse type of chronic inflammation that is called silent inflammation, this type is below the threshold of perceived pain so you will not be aware of it until an organ collapses and disease is manifested, this takes years. Remedies for inflammation include fish oils (omega 3), borrage oil (GLA), boswellia and curcumin
As for eliminating the subtle natural cramps remedies like cramps bark, magnesium, white willow bark are great for relaxing the muscles of the uterus and act as natural pain killers.
